Tips for Cleansing the skin

As a Beauty Therapist I get lots of questions about skincare, so today I’m sharing my tips on cleansing the skin. Do you cleanse your skin? Most people who I ask (who aren’t my Beauty Therapist friends) say they use make up wipes or wash their face in the shower- at which point I cringe a little inside. Now don’t get me wrong, from time to time I have resorted to make up wipes if I have ran out of my ordinary cleanser or maybe even use them before my actual cleanser. But you see, the problem with make up wipes is that yes they remove most of your make up, but a lot of the time, it just means your are just smearing your make up around the rest of your face.

So what should I be doing I hear you ask?

Well first of all you want to understand why you are cleansing your skin. Not only is it to remove make up, but you are also removing dirt, bacteria, any pollution that has landed on your skin throughout the day and it also treats your skin condition.

You may want to invest in a good quality cleanser. For the past few years I have been using Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish and I absolutely LOVE it. It’s quick and easy to use, smells gorgeous and is suitable for all skin types. You can use it all over your face, including the eyes (which means no need for an additional product if you don’t want to) and you remove it using a Muslin cloth which has been run under hot water. It’s so soothing and very effective. You can pick up a started kit for around £15. Of course, you can use whichever cleanser you like using the same principles below…

When cleansing, you should always perform 2 cleanses…..yes TWO!! This is because your first cleanse will remove the make up, dirt and bacteria, and the second cleanse will work deeper into the pores and help to reduce blackheads.

You must perform this morning AND night as when we sleep, we continue to produce oil onto the skin which can cause those pesky blackheads. BUT, if you don’t suffer from breakouts, please don’t feel like the double cleanse isn’t necessary for you, because it’s still just as important.

Do you go to bed with make up on?

I’m always shocked at how many people do. Yes we all have those moments when we stumble in from a night out (if your old enough of course…) and gracefully fall into bed and wake up in the morning with mascara all under our eyes! Yep- you know!!
Well let me tell you this little fact before you think about doing that again…For every night you go to sleep without taking your make up off, you age your skin by SEVEN days!!! Shocked?! You should be. Our skin starts to age from as young as 20- so make sure you look after it!
